Tiger Woods shoots one under on opening nine holes at Honda Classic

Tiger Woods shot a one-under-par 34 on his opening nine holes at the Honda Classic on Thursday morning. Starting on the back nine at PGA National, Woods made two birdies on his first four holes before bogeying No. 16 — the second of the course’s famed three-hole stretch known as “The Bear Trap.”

It was a relatively uneventful nine for the 14-time major champ, save for a par save he made from near a pretzel stand. Woods’ wild drive on No. 12 put him in a peculiar position, but the stand was moved before he hit his approach shot.

Woods, who struggled mightily with the driver last week at Riviera, stuck to a game plan of hitting mostly 3-woods and long irons off the tee. He hit four of seven fairways, but only four of nine greens. He putted well, though, including on No. 11, where he made this 18-footer for his first birdie:

This is Woods’ third PGA Tour start of 2018. Previously, he finished T-23 at the Farmers Insurance Open and missed the cut at the Genesis Open.
